The replacement of the bright steel standard DIN EN 10277:2018-09 is imminent. DIN EN ISO 683-7 cannot yet be ordered, but here is some information:
The new international standard DIN EN ISO 683-7 has been developed from the European standard that has been in existence for many years, so many of the known technological parameters continue to apply. Thus, nothing changes in terms of the chemical composition, yield strength, tensile strength and elongation at break of the known steel grades. The topics of ‘straightness deviation’ and ‘surface quality’ have also been fully incorporated into the international standard. Likewise, the designations for the delivery conditions remain valid.
In the international context, however, you will find the steel grade designations for ‘bright steels for general use’ with a partially new spelling. ‘S235JRC’ from DIN EN 10277 becomes ‘S235B’ in DIN EN ISO 683-7 and ‘S355J2C’ from DIN EN 10277 becomes in DIN EN ISO 683-7 to ‘S355D’ – in DIN EN ISO 683-7, the letters ‘B’ and ‘D’ indicate the requirements for the notched bar impact energy in the normalised condition. ‘B’ stands for ‘KV min. 20 J at RT’ and ‘D’ for ‘KV min. 20 J at -20 °C’.
The reference to the types of length in the dimensional inspection is also new in the area of ‘specific inspection’:
rods in manufacturing or storage lengths must be dimensionally accurate up to 150 mm from the rod end, while rods in exact lengths must be dimensionally accurate up to 10 mm from the rod end. Large cross-sections with a nominal thickness of over 100 mm may, by agreement, also show dimensional deviations up to 250 mm from the bar end.
