Since the mechanical properties are changed dramatically during the cold forming process, (yield and tensile strengths increase, whereas flexibility drops)
it is necessary to alter these characteristics for various applications.
In order to accomplish this, the most modern reversing furnace is used for steel bars at Andernach & Bleck. With it, we are able to perform different types of heat treatment.
In order to counteract the occurrence of decarburization or surface oxidation in the annealing process, our reversing furnace has a continuously controlled inert gas atmosphere as well as a computerized temperature control.
One of the various heat treatments is stress-relief annealing. This method greatly reduces the induced stress from the cold forming process, which minimizes the distortion in mechanical machining.
Soft annealing increases the formability of steel by lowering distortion resistance. In addition the use of this type of annealing on steel with carbon levels exceeding 0.4%C aids in machinability, in that the service life of tools is increased. (Tools cut in soft ferrite matrix)
Normalizing regains the original mechanical properties which increases the notch impact strength and positively influences the yield strength ratio. The combination of cold forming and normalizing results in a fine-grained microstructure.
A particular feature from Andernach & Bleck is the so-called GFS-annealing. Using this annealing method allows us to achieve predefined soft magnetic properties.

Testing

In addition to visual inspections and checks of dimensional accuracy through operator self-tests during all production processes, the Quality department conducts extensive inspections.

  • Non-destructive testing methods, such as eddy current flaw detection in rotation and differential spooling procedure, as well as ultrasonic examination, magnetic particle testing, dye penetrant inspection and roughness measurement check
  • Testing for magnetic particles
  • Chemical composition control comparing the details provided by the supplier and by means of emission spectrometer
